Locals Can Control Drilling Waste

Posted in Tompkins Weekly
May 17, 2010

Horizontal drilling in Marcellus shale has yet to begin in New York, but some communities face questions about how to handle drilling waste. The Chemung County landfill is already accepting drill cuttings from Marcellus wells in Pennsylvania, but there are few places to send drilling wastewater.

In the draft Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement (SGEIS), the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) states that Marcellus permits would require drilling companies to provide a disposal plan for fluid wastes.

Forum Outlines Risks to Drinking Water

Posted in Tompkins Weekly
April 26, 2010

Drilling for natural gas is inherently risky, and should not be allowed in the New York City watershed or near any water supply in the state. That was the message Dusty Horwitt shared with citizens, scientists and county and municipal officials early last week.

Horwitt, senior counsel for the Environmental Working Group, addressed the risks of gas drilling and drinking water in a forum at the Unitarian Church on April 18. The following day he brainstormed with scientists and elected officials about strategies and the need for further research.

Tabulating True Costs of Gas Drilling

Posted in Tompkins Weekly
April 12, 2010

Economic studies indicate that drilling in the Marcellus Shale will bring wealth to upstate communities. Certainly there will be some new jobs, Steve Coffman points out. There will be a spurt of supporting businesses and some people will see bonus and royalty income.

Residents Dig for Drilling Data

Posted in Tompkins Weekly
March 29, 2010

It was a hard choice to make: spend the afternoon raking or head to the Brooktondale Community Center to talk about gas drilling concerns. But 30 people, representing Dryden, Caroline, Danby, Ithaca and Enfield sacrificed the yard work to learn more about gas leases and compulsory integration on March 20.

But first we need a name, said Bill Podulka, who chaired the meeting. He listed a couple dozen names submitted by e-mail and, after some lively discussion the group decided to call itself the “Tompkins Gas Drilling Task Force.” At least for the time being.

Health Impacts of Gas Drilling Examined

Posted in Tompkins Weekly
March 1, 2010

“If tapping Marcellus Shale were like tapping maple trees we would not be here,” Dr. William Klepack said, opening a program on the health impacts of gas drilling. Close to 100 people filled the Forum room at Tompkins Cortland Community College last Tuesday night to hear what experts in chemistry and endocrinology had to say on the topic.

Water Act Revisions Target Gas Drilling

Posted in Tompkins Weekly
February 15, 2010

When the Republicans held majorities in both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, and President George W. Bush was in office, provisions were included in the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to exempt hydraulic fracturing operations, such as those planned in New York’s Southern Tier, from having to comply with federal Safe Drinking Water Act provisions prohibiting the injection wells used to produce natural gas from contaminating drinking water sources.

Disposal Wells Pose Problems

Posted in Tompkins Weekly
February 15, 2010

Most natural gas wells, once they’re past their prime, are plugged and abandoned. But not Trenton-Black River wells; they might find new life serving as disposal wells for brine and frackwater. “There is renewed interest in the [TBR] formation as a potential site for underground injection wells,” says Tom Murphy, a Penn State extension agent in Lycoming County, Pa.

CU’s Sustainability Needs Transparency

Posted in Tompkins Weekly
February 1, 2010

Cornell University got some good press mid-January, their “Coal-Free by Mid-2011” celebration showing off the campus power plant where natural gas is replacing coal. Cornell tends to get good press. They publish a lot of it themselves, as in the Cornell Chronicle online, but the local media often seems happy to accept Cornell’s publicrelations version of itself.
