Have you heard about ArtHouse! yet? I hope so, 'cus they are a powerhouse of communit activism and a catalys for community art. This Sunday they are presenting another free outdoor concert. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and your dancing shoes to Banfield Square in Van Etten on Sunday, June 26th, from 2 PM to 5 PM. They will be playing Finnish, Tex-Mex, and original music suited to the traditional dances of the Finger Lakes Region - waltzes, schottisches, polkas, mazurkas, two-steps, hambos and reels. Free "Love in Winter" show is Feb. 11
How well do you know your sweetie?
Find out Feb. 11 at "Love in Winter," a live family-friendly game show (à la The Newlywed Game) where local contestants test their knowledge of their sweethearts.
This free evening of entertainment will include prizes, local percussionist Polly Wood singing heartfelt love songs and valentine-making for kids. "Love in Winter" will take place Feb. 11, 7-10 p.m., Spencer Grange Hall, 57 E. Tioga St., Spencer.
The game show is open to people of all ages who are married, in a relationship or just plain friends – from long-time marrieds to fourth-grader buddies. (Come early to sign up!) Hilarity will ensue as host Smiley McLovesalot (Ithaca actor and goofball Tony Simione) leads contestants through a series of questions about each other. The couple who knows the most about each other will win a fabulous prize!
"According to his bio, McLovesalot's smile is said to cast `a rosy hue on all those around him – and will illuminate the stage for all to see through rose-colored glasses.'His dentist says that the red color of his teeth may also be due to advanced gingivitis.. . ." Tony is also known as Victor E. Rink, the voice and announcer of the Ithaca Suffer Jets roller derby team.
Percussionist Polly Wood will open the show with a set of gorgeous love songs. An Ithaca native, Polly weaves together a buttery voice, the influence of 1930s swing and the rhythms of the melodic tongue drum and the deep-voiced djembe. Her spirited sound has been called Appalachian jazz percussion and American ethnico folk.
Throughout the evening, local artists will be on hand to help children of all ages make valentines and other crafts. Art supplies will be provided.
This is the third in a series of Friday Fun Nights sponsored by ArtHouse, a community arts organization. ArtHouse provides free community-based events and classes in the arts and environmental studies to the children, adults and elders of Spencer, Van Etten and the surrounding area. I am a member of an community-based arts organization called  ArtHouse. And I wanted to let you know about another collaborative art opportunity. ArtHouse has a booth in the infield this year at the 20th Grassroots Festival of music and dance in Trumansburg, NY. Join us in making tiles that we will fire and be bringing to the Spencer Picnic on Saturday August 21st to glaze. ArtHouse will fire the tiles again and create a mosaic in a public place. Stay tuned to find out where. Or send in your ideas about a public place (it will need to be indoors) where you would like to see this collaborative work of art hang in our community. Thursday July 22 from 2-6pm, Friday the 23rd, Saturday the 24th, and Sunday the 25th from10am to 6pm. Making a tile is free with your admission to Grassroots and glazing a tile is absolutely FREE at the Spencer Picnic! Make sure you sign the guest book so that your name can be included as an artist in the dedication of the final mosaic and so that we can invite you to the unveiling celebration.

See you there!

ZwackArt Cayuga Mosaic

By ZwackArt / May 25, 2010 02:16 PM / 0 Comments

Maybe you came out and helped assemble this mosaic, maybe you have noticed the wall in "Art Alley" behind the Commons has been re-painted, maybe you have been hearing the buzz from your Ithaca student friends that a really large mosaic, made by many, many hands, and sponsored in part by the Ithaca Public Education Initiative and the Fine Art Booster Group, is being installed very soon. Well, it's true! We are on target for an unveiling at Ithaca Festival. Friday, June 4th at 4:30pm the mayor will be on hand to help us celebrate and reveal this massive mosaic that depicts the Cayuga Lake watershed at the southern end of the lake, the Ithaca end. Please come and join in the fun and be one of the 1st to see this community made public art!
